Join us for a contemplative evening as we begin our communal spiritual preparation for the new year. This Saturday night at 8 p.m., we will gather in the back of the sanctuary for Selichot.
Selichot are prayers and poems centered on teshuvah—repentance, return, reorientation. Sephardic Jews recite Selichot throughout the entire month of Elul, traditionally before dawn. Ashkenazi Jews begin late at night on the Saturday before Rosh Hashanah and continue in the early mornings that follow.
There is so much to process and encounter during the High Holidays, and our tradition wisely gives us time to prepare ourselves. Through music, liturgy, contemplative singing, and reflection, the practice of gathering for Selichot invites us to begin internalizing some of the central themes and melodies that will accompany us through the days ahead.
There is something mysterious and poetic about gathering in the darkness, before the sun has risen, as summer gives way to fall, to continue the process of forgiveness and return. We hope you’ll join us.
