Why the Statue of Liberty?
The Statue of Liberty is the perfect symbol for our time. She stands for:
- Freedom: Give me your tired, your poor / Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free. Freedom from oppression. Freedom from bigotry. Liberty to speak freely and safely. America must always be the land of liberty and justice for all.
- Welcoming & Diversity: From her beacon-hand glows world-wide welcome. The lamp beckons to immigrants from all corners of the earth. ALL are welcome here. She is the “Mother of Exiles,” explicitly embracing refugees.
- Opportunity for All: I lift my lamp beside the golden door. The door is open wide, signaling opportunity and prosperity ahead.
“To bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.”
— George Washington, 1790
